Join us for our May meeting where, after a few short announcements, we will be joined by Rob Hallock, author of, one of our recommended books, A Mushroom Word Guide: Etymology, Pronunciation, & Meanings of over 1,500 Words. The book is devoted to making the language of the field less intimidating for beginners, and serving as a reference for all the word components of their intimidating binomial names. He is a past president of the Colorado Mycological Society, and has published in peer-reviewed journals like FUNGI, Mushroom: The Journal of Wild Mushrooming, Toxicology & Industrial Health, and Drug and Alcohol Studies. He’s recorded many fungi that haven’t been documented in Indiana, and loves hunting in Indiana’s special ecosystems.
Rob is also the mind behind the Facebook group Mushroom Word of the Day- where he posts about the etymology of mycology terms and reminds us that the scientific names are not just random words, they have meanings that tell us something about the mushroom! He includes a phonetic pronunciation of the word and the root language and definition. We highly recommend joining the group to expand your mycological knowledge!
Rob will be presenting for us some of this interesting etymology of mycology.
