Hosted by the Alabama Mushroom Society, this is a class on fungal microscopy geared toward adults who are complete beginners and is open to the public. This is an AMS members only event.

I'm intending this to be very hands on, so bring your microscope and materials with you if you have them. If you do not, we have two club microscopes that can be used and necessary supplies will be provided.

Minimum age 12+ due to sharp instruments and handling chemicals. (Parent or guardian must be present.)

Some things I plan to cover:

Parts of your microscope

Recommended equipment and materials

How to calibrate your microscope (If you have a reticule eyepiece, I will bring my stage micrometer and assist you with calibration, depending on class size and time)

How to use your microscope, including the care and usage of an oil immersion objective.

Viewing spores and using microscopy images to assist with ID

Planes of sectioning and techniques for taking hand sections.

Chemicals used in microscopy

How to use stains and washes

Class fee is $5 per person and will be collected in cash at the event.

Registration is required and class size is limited to 30 individuals.
This is the class that is required in order to borrow one of the AMS lending microscopes.
