Alabama Mushroom Society Monthly Meeting

Frozen in Time

Capturing the Ephemeral for All to Experience
Presented by Anthoni Goodman

Mushrooms are inherently ephemeral. A fruiting body may emerge, mature, and disappear within only a few days, and many of the characteristics that make a specimen remarkable are difficult to preserve once it leaves the forest.

For our October monthly meeting, Anthoni Goodman will explore techniques for preserving mushrooms for education, study, and display, including his work preserving whole specimens in resin.

We'll look at the challenges of capturing a mushroom's three-dimensional form, discuss what different preservation methods can—and cannot—retain, and consider how preserved specimens can make otherwise fleeting features available for people to examine long after the original mushroom is gone.

Anthoni will be bringing the complete resin-preserved mushroom collection to the UAB Solar House. In-person attendees will be able to view the specimens up close, pick them up, handle them, and examine details that are normally almost impossible to preserve in a fresh mushroom.

Join us in person or online

This will be a hybrid meeting. Join us in person at the UAB Solar House, or attend remotely through Zoom.
